According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every two adults in the nation has gum disease. At Link, Jacobs & Link DDS, our goal is to spot the signs of this common oral disease as early as possible to keep it from wreaking havoc on your smile. When we do, we’ll be able to develop a treatment plan to stop or even reverse the effects. If you’ve noticed that your gums bleed when you brush and floss or that you have chronic bad breath, don’t hesitate to give us a call so we can screen your smile for gum disease.
Scaling is a two-step process that typically takes place between one or two appointments, depending on how far the infection has progressed. During the first step, our team will clear all plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, as far down as the pockets of your gums. We’ll then smooth out the roots of the teeth, which will allow the gum tissue to healthily reattach to the structure and provide the roots with much-needed protection.
In combination with scaling and root planing, we also typically recommend antibiotic therapy. We’ll prescribe a medicated mouthwash or a single pill for you to take each day to target the harmful oral bacteria causing your symptoms and affecting your gums and bone structure. It’s important that you complete the full antibiotic treatment so you don’t develop any resistant bacteria.
